RESEARCH SERVICES

My academic background is in forensic, clinical, and community psychology, with a more recent emphasis on qualitative methods. My 18+ years of research experience includes coordination of several multi-site RCT implementation trials focused on community health and training. I have worked in NGOs, juvenile justice, the prison system, research centres of excellence, community health settings, hospitals, medical training authorities, universities, schools, performing arts collectives, and with various grassroots initiatives variously focused on health/wellbeing. My current research interests are focussed on capturing clinical and training innovations through fine-tuned qualitative analysis, and clarifying key findings for practice (as well as illuminating a path for further innovation). I am also involved in knowledge translation projects that aim to convert those findings into on-the-ground change. My work in Australian medical training pathways relates to quality improvement across the levels of systems, doctor, and patient outcomes (most specifically with junior doctors and psychiatrists). I am particularly interested in the process of needs-adapted practice and complexity, and the critical role for qualitative research in this arena (narrative inquiry, interpretive description, thematic analysis, meta-ethnography, IPA). I have worked with lead Australian organisations for this purpose including Headspace, HETI, Relationships Australia, University of Sydney, UNSW, Black Dog Institute, St Vincents Hospital, Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Hunter New England LHD, Western Sydney LHD, among others.

AREAS OF INTEREST

I provide independent research services as a consultant. I can assist with study conceptualisation & design, data collection & analysis, report writing and knowledge translation. Areas of expertise include piloting and exploring experiences of novel or under-researched mental health interventions, mental health workforce development & training, medical education, and the elucidation of qualitative methods as a means to promote greater cross-fertilisation between practice-based wisdom and scientific knowledge.

METHODS

I prefer to work with mixed-methods and qualitative study designs, although I have experience with coordination of multi-site implementation RCTs and understand the world of quantitative methods. Qualitative methods I most commonly use are reflexive thematic analysis, interpretive description, narrative inquiry, narrative synthesis, and qualitative systematic review.
